You don't need salt, ice, or electricity to make ice cream, sherbet, frozen yogurt, or other icy treats with this machine. Just pop the unit into a freezer overnight, insert the plastic paddle, pour a favorite recipe into the chilling chamber, snap on the lid, and turn the crank. Nonstick for easy cleanup, the chilling chamber holds 1-1/2 pints and produces ice cream in about 25 minutes. The unit has a temperature indicator that turns green when the chilling chamber is frozen to "ideal," but the impatient can begin eating when the indicator reads "OK." The crank fits into either of two gears: one to scrape the chilling chamber's sides; the other to beat in air for volume and lightness. Using first gear produces a dense, creamy confection like Italian gelato.
